How to unlock FPS in Roblox (go above 60)

For years, Roblox was locked to 60 frames per second and people used third-party unlockers to get past it. Today Roblox has the setting built in. If your 144 Hz monitor still shows 60 FPS in Roblox, it's almost always this one option.

Quick answerIn a game, press Esc, open Settings and set Maximum Frame Rate to your monitor's refresh rate (for example 144 or 240). Then check that Windows runs the monitor at that rate.

1. Set the Maximum Frame Rate#

  1. Join any experience and press Esc.
  2. Open the Settings tab.
  3. Find Maximum Frame Rate and pick the value that matches your monitor.

The choices depend on your monitor: Roblox offers the rates your display can show. If you only see 60, Windows is running the monitor at 60 Hz, which is the next thing to check.

2. Check the refresh rate in Windows#

A 144 Hz monitor often runs at 60 Hz because Windows picked the safe default or the cable can't carry more. How to check and change the refresh rate. If 144 Hz is missing completely, look at the cable and at which port it's plugged into: graphics card or motherboard?

3. See your real FPS#

Press Shift + F5 in a game to show Roblox's performance stats, including the frame rate. Check it in a busy place, not in an empty lobby.

4. Graphics quality#

With Graphics Mode on Automatic, Roblox lowers the quality on its own when the frame rate drops. That can look like random blurriness. Set it to Manual and choose a Graphics Quality level that holds your frame rate in the experiences you play. Every experience is built differently: a level that runs at 240 FPS in one can struggle in another.

About FPS unlockers#

Third-party unlockers were the only way past 60 FPS before Roblox added the setting. They aren't needed anymore. Anything that hooks into the Roblox client is a risk with Roblox's anti-cheat, and downloaded tools are a common way malware gets onto PCs. Use the built-in option.

Check the setup first#

These cost frames in every game and show no error, so they're worth a minute before you touch any game setting:

  • Monitor in the graphics card, not the motherboard: how to tell the ports apart.
  • Refresh rate set to the monitor's maximum in Windows: how to check.
  • RAM at its rated speed (XMP or EXPO on): check in 30 seconds.
  • RAM in dual channel: how to check.
  • Game on an SSD, not a hard drive: why it matters.
  • Laptop: play plugged in, set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance, and under Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance so it runs on the dedicated graphics card.

Questions#

Why is Roblox stuck at 60 FPS?
Either the Maximum Frame Rate setting in Roblox is at 60, or Windows runs your monitor at 60 Hz, so Roblox doesn't offer more.
Is it safe to use an FPS unlocker in Roblox?
It isn't needed anymore: Roblox has the Maximum Frame Rate setting built in. Third-party tools that change the client are a risk with the anti-cheat and a common source of malware.
Why does Roblox stutter even at high FPS?
Experiences load parts of the map while you play, and some are simply heavy. Play from an SSD, close background apps, and check that your RAM runs at its rated speed in dual channel.

Frametide's scan checks your PC for setup problems like this one and tells you how many it found (Basic, €12.99 once). Premium (€26.99 once) shows which ones and how to fix them. With Premium it can also set Roblox's own graphics settings as part of presets and measure FPS and stutters in the game.
