CS2 FPS drops and stutter: what to check

Counter-Strike 2 runs at very high frame rates, so it leans on the processor and memory more than on the graphics card. That's why a strong PC can still drop frames or hitch in a firefight: the cause is usually a limit, a setting or a setup mistake.

Quick answerCheck fps_max in the console, remove old launch options, set Fullscreen and your monitor's refresh rate, then make sure your RAM runs at its rated speed in dual channel.

1. See your real frame rate#

Turn on the performance display in Settings → Game → Telemetry, or type cl_showfps 1 in the console. Watch it in a real match, not in the menu: menu frame rates mean nothing.

2. Check the frame limit#

CS2's frame cap is the console variable fps_max. Type fps_max in the console to see the current value. 0 means no cap. If your frame rate sits on the exact same number whatever you change, this (or V-Sync, or a limit in the graphics driver) is the reason. A cap isn't bad: a value a bit below what your PC holds in a busy round makes frame times steadier. Just make sure it's one you chose.

3. Display mode and refresh rate#

In Settings → Video, use Fullscreen and set Refresh Rate to your monitor's maximum. Then check that Windows runs the monitor at that rate too.

4. Remove old launch options#

Many old guides recommend launch options like -high, -threads or -nojoy. Most of them do nothing in CS2, and some can make things worse. If you have any set (Steam → right-click Counter-Strike 2 → Properties → General → Launch Options), remove them and test without.

5. NVIDIA Reflex#

NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency in the advanced video settings lowers the delay between your input and the picture. Worth turning on, but it lowers latency, it doesn't raise FPS.

6. The first rounds after an update#

After a game or driver update, the first match can hitch while shaders are rebuilt. That settles after a few rounds. If it never settles, look at the setup checks below.

Check the setup first#

These cost frames in every game and show no error, so they're worth a minute before you touch any game setting:

  • Monitor in the graphics card, not the motherboard: how to tell the ports apart.
  • Refresh rate set to the monitor's maximum in Windows: how to check.
  • RAM at its rated speed (XMP or EXPO on): check in 30 seconds.
  • RAM in dual channel: how to check.
  • Laptop: play plugged in, set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance, and under Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance so it runs on the dedicated graphics card.

Drivers, background apps and heat#

  • Graphics driver: install the current one from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel directly, not only through Windows Update.
  • Overlays and tools: overlays, recording software and RGB lighting tools rarely lower the average, but can cause short freezes. Close them one by one and play the same mode again.
  • Heat: if the game gets slower after a few minutes, watch clock speeds and temperatures with HWiNFO (free). A clock speed that drops during a match means the processor or graphics card is too hot: clean the dust out and give the case air.

Questions#

Why does CS2 stutter on a good PC?
CS2 depends mostly on the processor and memory at high frame rates. Memory without its XMP/EXPO profile, single-channel RAM, a forgotten frame cap, old launch options or a laptop on battery are the most common reasons a strong PC still stutters.
What should fps_max be?
0 for no cap, or a value slightly below what your PC holds in a busy round. Uncapped gives the most frames; a cap gives steadier frame times. Try both in the same map and compare the lows, not just the average.
Is it my PC or the servers?
If the FPS counter drops or the picture freezes, it's your PC. If the picture stays smooth but players teleport or shots don't register, it's the connection: check ping and packet loss in the telemetry display.
Check it automatically

Frametide's free scan checks your PC for setup problems like this one and tells you how many it found. Premium shows which ones and how to fix them. With Premium it also measures FPS, 1% lows and stutters in the game itself, so you can see which settings actually help.
