Apex Legends FPS drops and stutter: what to check
Apex Legends has a few settings that quietly limit your frame rate or make the picture blurry to hit a target, plus a texture setting that causes stutter when it's set higher than your graphics card can hold.
+fps_max 0, set Adaptive Resolution FPS Target to 0, and set the Texture Streaming Budget to fit your graphics card's memory.1. Check the frame rate cap#
If your FPS sits on the exact same number whatever you change, it's capped. Apex's cap can be set with the launch option +fps_max (Steam: right-click Apex Legends → Properties → Launch Options; EA app: game settings → Advanced launch options). +fps_max 0 removes the cap; a value a bit below your monitor's refresh rate gives steadier frame times with G-Sync or FreeSync. Also check V-Sync in the game and any limit in your graphics driver.
2. Turn off Adaptive Resolution#
Adaptive Resolution FPS Target in the video settings lowers the resolution whenever the frame rate falls below the target. It keeps the FPS up, but the picture turns blurry in fights. Set it to 0 to turn it off, then find settings that hold your frame rate without it.
3. Set the texture streaming budget to fit your graphics card#
Texture Streaming Budget decides how much of your graphics card's memory textures may use. Set too high, the memory runs full and the game stutters while it swaps textures. Pick a level that matches your card's memory (the game shows the amount next to each level), and lower it one step if you see hitches when you turn or land.
4. Fullscreen and refresh rate#
Use Display Mode: Full Screen and make sure Windows runs your monitor at its maximum refresh rate.
5. NVIDIA Reflex#
NVIDIA Reflex lowers the delay between input and picture. Worth turning on; it doesn't raise FPS.
Check the setup first#
These cost frames in every game and show no error, so they're worth a minute before you touch any game setting:
- Monitor in the graphics card, not the motherboard: how to tell the ports apart.
- Refresh rate set to the monitor's maximum in Windows: how to check.
- RAM at its rated speed (XMP or EXPO on): check in 30 seconds.
- RAM in dual channel: how to check.
- Laptop: play plugged in, set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance, and under Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance so it runs on the dedicated graphics card.
Drivers, background apps and heat#
- Graphics driver: install the current one from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel directly, not only through Windows Update.
- Overlays and tools: overlays, recording software and RGB lighting tools rarely lower the average, but can cause short freezes. Close them one by one and play the same mode again.
- Heat: if the game gets slower after a few minutes, watch clock speeds and temperatures with HWiNFO (free). A clock speed that drops during a match means the processor or graphics card is too hot: clean the dust out and give the case air.
Questions#
Why does Apex look blurry in fights?
Why does Apex stutter when I land or turn quickly?
Does +fps_max 0 give more FPS?
Frametide's free scan checks your PC for setup problems like this one and tells you how many it found. Premium shows which ones and how to fix them. With Premium it also measures FPS, 1% lows and stutters in the game itself, so you can see which settings actually help.
