Fortnite stutter and FPS drops: what to check

Fortnite stutters for a few reasons that have nothing to do with how fast your PC is: shaders being built after an update, assets streaming in mid-match, a frame limit you forgot, or a setup mistake that costs frames everywhere.

Quick answerCheck the Frame Rate Limit, pick the Rendering Mode on purpose, turn on Pre-download Streamed Assets in the Epic Games Launcher, and expect hitches for a few matches after each update.

1. Turn on the FPS display#

Switch on Show FPS in Fortnite's video settings and watch it in a real match. The lobby's frame rate tells you nothing.

2. Check the frame rate limit#

In the video settings, Frame Rate Limit caps your FPS. Set it to your monitor's refresh rate, a little below it if you use G-Sync or FreeSync, or to Unlimited. If your FPS sits on one number whatever you change, this (or V-Sync, or a driver limit) is the reason.

3. Pick the rendering mode on purpose#

Rendering Mode offers DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Performance. Performance mode lowers the graphics a lot and gives the highest frame rates on weaker PCs. DirectX 12 looks best but builds shaders as you play, which can cause hitches in the first matches. The mode changes after a restart of the game. Test each one in the same mode and keep the one that runs steadiest.

4. Stutter after every update#

After a Fortnite or driver update, the first matches often hitch while shaders are built. That settles after a few games. It's normal and not a sign that something is wrong with your PC.

5. Pre-download streamed assets#

Fortnite can load textures and other assets while you play, which causes hitches when they arrive. In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library, click the three dots on Fortnite, open Manage (or Options) and turn on Pre-download Streamed Assets. It uses more disk space and removes that source of stutter. Install Fortnite on an SSD, not a hard drive.

6. Upscaling and Reflex#

If the graphics card is the limit, upscaling (DLSS, FSR or TSR) raises FPS for a small loss in sharpness. NVIDIA Reflex lowers input delay; it doesn't raise FPS.

Check the setup first#

These cost frames in every game and show no error, so they're worth a minute before you touch any game setting:

  • Monitor in the graphics card, not the motherboard: how to tell the ports apart.
  • Refresh rate set to the monitor's maximum in Windows: how to check.
  • RAM at its rated speed (XMP or EXPO on): check in 30 seconds.
  • RAM in dual channel: how to check.
  • Laptop: play plugged in, set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance, and under Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance so it runs on the dedicated graphics card.

Drivers, background apps and heat#

  • Graphics driver: install the current one from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel directly, not only through Windows Update.
  • Overlays and tools: overlays, recording software and RGB lighting tools rarely lower the average, but can cause short freezes. Close them one by one and play the same mode again.
  • Heat: if the game gets slower after a few minutes, watch clock speeds and temperatures with HWiNFO (free). A clock speed that drops during a match means the processor or graphics card is too hot: clean the dust out and give the case air.

Questions#

Why does Fortnite stutter but the FPS is high?
A high average can hide single slow frames. Shader building after updates, streamed assets and background apps cause exactly those short hitches. Look at the lows, not just the average: what 1% lows are.
DirectX 11, DirectX 12 or Performance mode?
Performance mode for the most FPS on weaker PCs. DirectX 12 for the best picture on stronger PCs, with some hitches while shaders are built. DirectX 11 sits in between. There's no single answer: test them in the same mode.
Does more RAM help Fortnite?
16 GB is enough for Fortnite. Speed and dual channel matter more than size.
Check it automatically

Frametide's free scan checks your PC for setup problems like this one and tells you how many it found. Premium shows which ones and how to fix them. With Premium it also measures FPS, 1% lows and stutters in the game itself, so you can see which settings actually help.
