GTA V stutter and FPS drops: what to check

GTA V runs well on most PCs, yet it's known for one kind of stutter that has nothing to do with weak hardware, plus a few settings that cost far more than they show. Here's what to check, in order.

Quick answerCap the frame rate below about 180 FPS, lower Grass Quality, MSAA and the extended distance options first, and play from an SSD.

1. Stutter at very high frame rates#

The original (Legacy) version of GTA V is known to stutter and hitch when it runs at very high frame rates, roughly above 180 FPS. If your PC is fast and the game still feels choppy, cap the frame rate below that: with your graphics driver's frame limit (NVIDIA Max Frame Rate, AMD Radeon Chill with the same minimum and maximum) or a limiter like RivaTuner. Pick a value at or just below your monitor's refresh rate.

2. The settings that cost the most#

  • Grass Quality: the most expensive setting in the countryside. High looks close to Ultra at a fraction of the cost.
  • MSAA: anti-aliasing that multiplies the work for the graphics card. Try FXAA or a lower MSAA level.
  • Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadows Distance (Advanced Graphics): costly on the processor and graphics card.
  • Population Density and Population Variety: more people and cars mean more work for the processor.

Watch the Video Memory bar at the top of the graphics menu: going over your card's memory causes stutter, especially when driving fast.

3. Fullscreen and refresh rate#

Use Fullscreen and set the Refresh Rate in the game to your monitor's maximum. Check that Windows runs the monitor at that rate too.

4. Install the game on an SSD#

GTA V streams the city while you drive. From a hard drive, textures arrive late and the game hitches at speed. Why games need an SSD.

Check the setup first#

These cost frames in every game and show no error, so they're worth a minute before you touch any game setting:

  • Monitor in the graphics card, not the motherboard: how to tell the ports apart.
  • Refresh rate set to the monitor's maximum in Windows: how to check.
  • RAM at its rated speed (XMP or EXPO on): check in 30 seconds.
  • RAM in dual channel: how to check.
  • Game on an SSD, not a hard drive: why it matters.
  • Laptop: play plugged in, set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance, and under Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance so it runs on the dedicated graphics card.

Questions#

Why does GTA V stutter on a good PC?
The original version stutters at very high frame rates (roughly above 180 FPS); capping the frame rate fixes it. Other common reasons are too little video memory for the chosen settings, the game on a hard drive, and RAM without its XMP/EXPO profile.
Which GTA V setting costs the most FPS?
Grass Quality on Ultra, MSAA and the extended distance options in Advanced Graphics.
Check it automatically

Frametide's scan checks your PC for setup problems like this one and tells you how many it found (Basic, €12.99 once). Premium (€26.99 once) shows which ones and how to fix them. With Premium it can also set GTA V's own graphics settings as part of presets and measure FPS, 1% lows and stutters in the game.
